Why am I only popular when I go camping?

Dear Love & Learn,

I've never written to you guys before, but I feel that this question is in my own area of expertise and I'd like to throw in my two cents worth.

I Was a Camp Counselor

I spent four summers as a camp counselor during high school (I'm 23 now), and I'm 99% sure I know exactly what's going on here.  Even if this question was about plain ol' camping and not 'summer camp', this can still apply.  First of all, if the answers of Alicia and the guest (Queenie?) were combined, they'd be pretty much on target.

Anyway, what's happening here is a combination of three things, the first being the most significant:

  1. At summer camp, the majority of teenagers equipped with a healthy supply of hormones become horny as hell, especially the boys.

  2. There is a much smaller pool of people to choose from than at school, i.e. the average girls at school become the hotties at camp.

  3. Hypergrrl Thank you! You understand exactly how I feel.
At camp, it's super easy and tempting to ditch your usual persona and adopt a wild and free one. And as far as attractiveness goes, wild and free is more attractive to most people than goody-goodiness is, even if they come in similar physical packages.

Unfortunately (referring to points 2 and 3), when you go back to school, you pretty much have to be your old self  and accept your old social status again.  It's a crappy adjustment to have to make, but with a little logic it shouldn't blow someone's self-esteem.

P.S  There are a growing number of adult summer camps out there... the above applies to them as well, not just teens!  (I'm basing this on what I've been told.)  For example, see the movie "Indian Summer". Sorry to be so long-winded.
