So if I had to pick a side, I would say that a platonic friendship will eventually lead to romantic feelings, at least for one person involved...

A Reader Responds:

Personally, I think that platonic relationship very much exist. I have several "just friends" relationship with guys and we all laugh at the thought of us ever dating.

There are different types of love ... Eros for romantic and affectionate love, and phileo love ... Meaning brotherly love. These have different emotional attachment to the other. Whether a man or a woman is more capable of having a platonic relationship isn't fair.

There are some guys I know that could easily have just a friendship, and several girls too. And several guys and girls who can't keep in the frame of mind of platonic relationships.

To say one sex is more capable than the other is a huge generalization. It's the maturity level of the individual person that matters.

As far as in marriages, although it may not be widely accepted, it isn't impossible. My father would have lunch with a female friend on her birthday with nothing happening.
