Why Valentine's Day
isn't such a big deal.
I am a romantic at heart,
and Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays. But in some
ways, Valentine's Day has turned into a commercial bonanza, and
has created a lot of pressure for people to do or buy certain things
simply because the calendar rolls over to February 14th. You don't
have to "do" or "be" anything on that day just because everyone
else is! Honestly assess your motives for what you do on Valentine's
Day and make sure you are doing it to genuinely express your affection,
and not because the calendar dictates your actions.
Going one step further,
have you ever wondered why we don't treat every day like Valentine's
Day? I would be suspicious of a boyfriend or girlfriend who treats
you to gifts or romantic dinners only on Valentine's Day, and doesn't
carry that effort through the rest of the year. I would have to
wonder if the "special treatment" is really sincere, or if this
is just "what you do" on that day.
So, while I think we
should enjoy Valentine's Day to the fullest, I also think we should
keep it in its proper perspective (especially for those of you who
are single). Try not to fall into the trap of having to keep up
with what everyone else is doing or feeling like you have to be
in a romantic relationship on that day for it to be special. Valentine's
Day is really a day to simply recognize the people we love and to
return to the things that we should be doing anyway: expressing
our love for them.
