Reader's Response

Gillian said:

Like so many holidays, Valentine's Day has become a commercial holiday.

Jeannie Responds:

Though Valentine's Day as it exists, with pink hearts and flowers (though I love the little candy things) doesn't interest me, the concept of honoring people I love DOES interest me.

Gillian

Actually, Valentine's Day has become commercialized.

Valentine's Day is about romantic love and the preservation of it.

Legend of St. Valentine (for those who care)

The most popular legend of St. Valentine is from third century Rome. The emperor decided that single men made better soldiers than married men and he outlawed marriage for young, single men (yes, I can see the men clapping for this...:).

St. Valentine felt this was an injustice to those who wanted to get married, and defied the Emperor and married couples in secret.

It's also legend that St. Valentine sent the very first "Valentine" while in prison for his deeds, where he fell in love with a young girl. He allegedly wrote her a letter and signed it "From Your Valentine."

It Doesn't HAVE to Be Commercial

Valentine's Day can be whatever you make it. It is important to some people and NOT important to others. The idea of it is supposed to be to celebrate love - whatever that means to you.
