Dear Panel,

I was just wondering when is it okay to start talking about getting engaged. When do you know that you're ready? My boyfriend and I have only been together for three months but I already feel very strongly about having him a part of my life for forever, but is it too early to start talking about it, or to even get engaged?

3 Months Is A Bit Too Soon

Let's see... yeah, I think 3 months is a bit too soon, for a couple reasons. First of all, you don't wanna scare him. Are you sure he's ready for such a big step? He may casually talk about the future, but that doesn't mean he's prepared to get down on one knee so soon.

It's painful to breakup after an engagment.

6 Months is minimal.

Second of all, it takes more than 3 months to really know a person. I'm not saying you're wrong to have these feelings for him. That's a good sign, actually... but if the two of you make serious plans to spend your lives together, then find out you're not as compatible as you originally thought, it'll be all the more painful if the relationship ends. I learned that the hard way (not fun!).

It's great that you enjoy his company this far into your relationship, but I think the safe thing is to take some more time and see how you both feel in another couple of months. Better safe than sorry, no? Then again, look at Dharma and Greg. ;-)
