Answers:

You know, if every time a relationship broke up, someone had to move to California, there would be a shitload of people in California.

Oh, wait a minute, maybe we have something here. Dang, I'm already in California, so where do I go?

He WANTS to Move to California

You're right. She shouldn't believe him, it's just a line.

But even so, I think maybe there's something else going on here than him escaping from this dastardly other woman. Maybe he's going because he WANTS to move to California.

Don't You Want to be the One in a Relationship?

Most of the time being the "other" in a relationship is a drag.

I know that I want to be the "one" in a relationship. It's pretty clear that yes, you ARE the "other", and in addition, you are not enough to make him want to stay in your city.

So bearing this in mind, the question about whether to "take advantage of the time you have left with John" is simplified.

It does not look like you will establish any kind of lasting relationship with him.

Except that he is an idiot, and she shouldn't waste her time.
  • If you want to fool around with him, then go ahead.
  • If you want to look for a more permanent guy, then go ahead.

But the two are probably mutually exclusive, so don't go getting your heart broken.
