Dear Carin,
It's
Hard to Hear
Unfortunately you may
hurt his feelings no matter what you say. Even guys who are used
to strong macho locker room smells, and should know better, are
affronted to learn that they are not odorless.
I've
Been There
I myself was once told
to take a shower because I was "sandy from the beach". When I examined
my entire body and could find no sand, my girlfriend finally admitted
that I was too stanky to be in the same car with her until I showered.
Hey, what did she expect after rollerblading at the beach in the
sun for 4 hours? I was devastated. For a few minutes. But taking
a shower at the beach in front of the volleyball courts was kind
of cool.
However, if he's stanky
again in 30 minutes, there's a bigger problem. You can suggest that
he use deodorants more liberally, but there might be problems with
that in terms of allergies, or the deodorant may not be powerful
enough. You can also suggest that he see a doctor for other alternatives
and to check if there is a biological problem, and see what your
boyfriend thinks about that.
Sometimes there's no
solution. Sometimes people just smell disagreeable to other people
because of "body chemistry".
Send
Him to the Showers
If it's important to
you, and strong smells certainly can be relationship stoppers, you
have to do something. So bring it up to your boyfriend, give him
some of these suggestions, and in a firm, loving, and straightforward
way, tell him, "You're stanky--hit the showers!"
If all of this doesn't
work, or he's upset at finding out the truth, then you can either
learn to use a clothespin or hit the road.
