Dear Costume Picky,
Rugrats
Don't Care About Ugly Costumes
Ok, first of all, let's
get one issue straight. The fashion sense of some one year-old rugrat
is even worse than mine. What this means is that HE DOES NOT CARE.
So it's not about your
poor son being forced to wear some outfit that will scar him for
life. It's about YOU!
Your
Desires Aren't Secondary to Your Husband's
But now that we have
that straight, it does not lessen the problem. The real question
is why your desires are any less important than your husband's.
If this "picky costume" drama is so important to you,
then your feelings about it should be weighed and considered heavily.
Your
Mother-in-Law Is Not the Enemy
Looking at other things,
your mother-in-law may be goofy and not too smart, but she sure
seems nice and considerate to me. She went out of her way to try
to do something nice for you. There are so many evil witches in
this world who go out of their way to hurt people that I try not
to spend my time resenting nice people whose intentions don't always
work out. And, BTW, you might think about not turning into one of
those witches yourself.
Return the Costume You Bought
Listen, take a chill
pill and de-escalate the situation. Return what you've bought and
let your kid wear grandma's outfit. No matter how ugly the costume
is, everyone will tell you it's wonderful -- who would say a one
year-old's costume is not cute? And come on, your kid couldn't care
less.
Talk
to Your Husband
But make sure you communicate
with your husband about the way you feel, and let him know that
you'll be the fashion sense of the family in the future, even if
it costs $20 an outfit. And your feelings ARE as important as his
at all times.
