Can I date my future step-sister?

A Guest Answers:

Dear "in love with my step-sister",

It Would Be Awkward

This situation does seem a bit awkward. At first I was inclined to tell you to just go for it -- you aren't related by blood and therefore everything about it is legal.

You'll Become Her Brother

Patra I would agree with you if they were being raised together from youth. These 2 are in their teens.

But then I got to thinking. . . If you two do have a relationship, and it lasts more than a year, you will end up moving in with your girlfriend. I have always had a problem with this situation -- I don't like it. If you are living with her you had better be her husband or her brother. This makes it even MORE awkward since you WOULD BE her brother.

This is my advice:

Consider Your Parents

I would not attempt anything more than a best friends relationship between the two of you.

Jayne That's OK: according to sitcoms you're supposed to hate your step-sister anyway.

Many boyfriend/girlfriend relationships result in two people hating each other and never wanting to see each other again. This could get very difficult if you are either living in the same house, or seeing each other all the time anyway since your parents see each other all the time. This could not only cause difficulty between the two of you, but think of the fix it would put your parents in!!!

Just Be Friends

Forget the boyfriend/girlfriend idea. Just be friends. At 14 and 15 it is just about the same thing anyway -- minus the kissing of course. You two can still do stuff together and have fun and spend a lot of time together. But don't turn it into anything difficult, don't try to complicate it. It can only make things very difficult and horribly awkward down the road.
