Dear Stary Eyed,
To answer your question about whether or not a prisoner can be
released and become a productive individual, the answer is "yes",
but not likely.
Matters of Honesty
In other words, the odds are greatly stacked against this man.
Since the offense wasn't violent or sexual in nature, that only
leaves matters of finance, theft or honesty left to land him in
the big house.
A Good Woman Can Help
With that said, it will be hard for him to get back on his feet
with a record, but it can be done. Especially if he has the support
of a good woman behind him.
I've personally known two people who did time. One came out (after
8 years), made a change in his life and never looked back. The other
spent 10 years in prison, was free for about a year and went right
back in for the same old thing.
His "Love" Must Be Tested in the Free World
Secondly, this whole "love" thing has got to be tested
in the free world. I'd love you, too, if I was locked up and all
alone. When he gets more options and he still chooses you, that's
when you'll know if his feelings for you are real, not being forged
by his circumstance. He probably is sincere in the way he feels,
but that may be only because he doesn't have much choice.
Wait Until He's Out
Whatever you do, take it SLOW! Not just because he's a con, but
because relationships are tricky, regardless of whether or not one
has been convicted of a crime. Anybody can feed you with what you
want to hear to get what they want from you. It's hard enough to
know when that's happening with a physically present boyfriend,
let alone someone that you don't even see or spend time with regularly.
I don't think you can have a good, solid clue about things until
he's out. Then his actions can speak louder than his words.
God Bless!
