You're Looking for Validation
It sounds to me like you've already made up your mind. You seem
to realise that you have feelings for this, Mark, but are looking
for validation from those of us on the panel. You already said that
you want to date Mark and that you are close, so your problem doesn't
really seem to be whether or not you should date him, but how you
will deal with your ex so that he doesn't go nuclear about this.
He's Either Your Ex or Your Friend
Just for clarification, we'll just call Riley your ex even though
you've called him your friend. I figure you have to pick a lane.
He's your Ex or he's your friend. You can't call him your friend
if you dwell on him being your ex.
Bros Before H-'s
I know that if/ when you and Mark hook up, Riley'll be hurt (believe
me, been there) but you can't let that keep you from finding out
if you and Mark can mesh. It's always a touchy subject betwen guy
friends when it concerns a girl, what with the old rule "Bros
before h-- (girls)."
Go for It
I guess I would say that if he asks, go for it, but be tactful
when Riley's about. He'll probably be hurt, but if he's as nice
a guy as you say, he'll get over it.
