Brandan and Nickers:
Don't Give Up without a Fight
It sounds like you guys have something really special. When you
find someone you can really connect with, it's the best feeling
in the world. You should definitely not give it up without a fight.
It's always hard when parents and kids can't see eye to eye, but
unfortunately it happens all the time. I can see where your parents
are coming from, because when you're 16, four years does make a
big difference.
All Guys Are Not the Same
But all guys are not the same, and Brandan obviously cares for
you a great deal, and he respects you which is so important.
Let Them See Him at Work
It seems a little immature of your parents to refuse to even meet
him. You could try inviting your parents to see you at work, and
then Brandan would be working there and that might be a way for
them to at least see that he is respectful and nice.
Invite Him to Dinner
Another way is to try and talk to them on their level. Sit down
with your parents and tell them that you understand why they have
some concerns about him, and tell them that their concerns for you
are appreciated and that you love them. Then ask them calmly if
they wouldn't mind if he came over for dinner at your house, where
you could all eat together and they could see what a great guy he
is.
You Could Wait
But even if they like him, they may still have some concerns about
you dating him. This is only reasonable because he is twenty and
you are sixteen. But since you guys seem to care for each other
enough to want a future together maybe you could wait. You could
still talk on the phone, but you could cool down the dating stuff
until high school graduation.
Sneaking Around Will Only Work Against You
But no matter what, try and get your parents to meet him, and be
honest with them, sneaking around will only work against you.
Talk to your parents like adults and they will treat you as one.
Good luck to both of you, I hope everything works out
