Reader's Response

KP said:

Loneliness is a symptom which may stem from depression, which is now curable with diagnosis and treatment. Being alone is a state of mind that can be altered by taking charge of the situation and changing it.

A Reader Responds:

Loneliness Is Real

I disagree. Loneliness is real.

Some people are more alone than others--to deny this fact of life is profoundly ignorant; moreover, the pop-psychological willingness to deny that loneliness exists as a phenomenon might not be amenable to psychopharmacological intervention.

Drugs will mask the problem, but they won't make it go away.

KP's Statement Was Patronizing

Assuming that this person can meet someone suitable, then I agree that her "state of mind" would be altered by having taken charge of her situation in this manner, but otherwise the statement is platitudinous, and therefore patronizing.
