I swear I didn't know she was 12, what do I do?

Answers:

Dear Dizzy Devil,

Wow. Where do I begin?

OK. So you met this girl in a chat room. There's your first mistake. I dunno, it's just hard enough to believe people when they are right in front of your face, let alone the fact that you can't see someone, then you develop a relationship, and then it's all over.

I am not interested in addressing this girl's age so much, because you should know better – I don't care if she is the coolest 12-year-old in town.

Age Is More Than a Number

Jeannie

You're right, t's more than an age issue – he fell in love with a woman who doesn't exist.

Age is more than just a number – it's experience levels, maturity levels and general coping and social skills – which brings me to my next point:

Kids Don't Have the Coping Skills

This girl apparently is operating at a 12-year-old level. Kids her age are so volatile and confused and they will threaten anything (read: suicide) because they just don't understand life. They don't have the coping skills to deal with rejection, not getting what they want, etc.

Kalia Don't Take Her Threats Seriously

Shaggy

All suicide threats must be taken seriously, regardless.

I know that some people would have you take her threat seriously. I would not.

Get the Hell Out of There

I would get your head together and get the hell out of there. If you are comfortable talking to her friends or parents, you could always let them know that she made this threat. It's their problem – not yours. You are not obligated to do everything this girl demands just so she won't do something stupid. She is 12 and you met her in a chat room!

You're a Child Molester

I know I may sound harsh, but you need to be level-headed and responsible for YOURSELF. And the law does not look kindly on child molesters either, because that is what this is on paper, sexual relations or not.

I Dated an 18-Year-Old When I Was 12

Let me close with a little story from my past. When I was 12, I met a guy who was 18 and told him I was 18, too. Pretty similar situation – I liked the relationship because he didn't treat me like a child. I also liked the attention and the physical activity – I won't lie.

But then I started feeling guilty and I would lower my age to him every week, and he would be totally fine with it. By the time I was telling him that I was 14, he still wouldn't flinch – he thought things were great. Then I realized "Oh my gosh. This guy is a loser. He would date me if I was 5!"

Leave No Matter What She Says

The point of my whole spiel is this – ETHICS and INTEGRITY. You know how old she is. No matter what she says, LEAVE. You do not want this crazy little girl messing up your 23-year-old world.

Jimmy

Yes! He absolutely must tell her parents.

Never talk to her again, tell her parents and run like the wind and don't look back!

But Kalia, ANYBODY can lie.

And stop going to chat rooms to meet people. Next time, you may end up with a hairy 56-year-old man, and he may not be so nice... :)
