Dear Stephen and Sondra,
Boy, and I thought my husband and I had problems because we are
of two different religions and had to negotiate helping each other
celebrate their holiday while still honoring our own traditions.
I never even thought of VALENTINE'S DAY!
Celebrate With Family
Could you two maybe go celebrate Valentine's day with Sondra's
family? That way you'll be honoring her traditions.
Say "Happy Valentine's Day"
Stephen, could you start the day out with "Sondra, happy Valentine's
Day. I know today means a lot to you, just like you mean a lot to
me. I love you."
Would That Be Enough?
Sondra, would that be good enough? Because COME ON, that is what
love is all about. Being able to see the other person's point of
view and giving in in a way that doesn't compromise your own principals.
Realize
What's Important
You both need to calm down, realize what is really important (that
you have a happy loving relationship), realize what is somewhat
important (that the person you married is an interesting person
with traditions and values all their own) and acknowledge what isn't
important (getting your way all the time).
