A Reader Responds:
I disagree because it's absurd to stereotype people in
the midwest as more commitment-oriented than others. This
all feeds in to the costal perception of midwesterners as
unworldly, backward, naive types.
People Are Different
People are different everywhere. Some people are attracted
to marriage immediately, others like to keep their options
open. Some people like sex, others like to wait.
That was a lovely anecdote, but really not reflective of
some general rule midwestern dating.
Mass Media, Race, Class, Education
Anyway, people aren't confined to their small towns anymore
(small towns in California OR Oklahoma) -- it's doubtful
that any one region has relationship rules that are different
from another. Americans get most of their ideas from the
mass media. The SAME huge megaconglomerate mass media. There
is variation, but in the case of dating, it isn't regional.
If anything, it has more to do with race, class, and education
level.
