What hypocritical bull.
Of COURSE you meant "nice" as a code word. You
used it to REJECT someone under the PRETENSE of being POLITE
instead of honest.
Why didn't you just say "I'm not interested in you
romantically." PERIOD. This "You're nice, but..."
crap is so transparent.
"Nice" Means Nothing
Didn't your English teacher ever inform you that the word
"nice" doesn't mean anything, anyway? Think about
it. What the hell DOES it mean? If you mean "pleasant",
why don't you say "pleasant"? Or "kind"?
Or "inoffensive"? Or "comfortably dull"?
"Nice" is such a vague, NONCOMMITAL word, that
its use automatically means you don't care about what you're
describing enough to find a more specific, apt word.
By the way, when I use the word "nice", I DO
mean it as a code word for something I don't give a damn
about. So I agree with Jayne
for having the honesty and insight to point out the ways
people equivocate, even if they do it UNCONSCIOUSLY.
